  • Physical description: Bischof Bernward (990-995) an seinem Hof in Würzburg einen stolzen, tatkräftigen Ritter hatte, der zum Feind von Heinrich von Schweinfurt, 980-1017 Graf im Nordgau, wurde und diesem viel Schaden zufügte. Graf Heinrich ließ den Ritter ergreifen und blenden. Bischof Bernward erwirkte vom König daraufhin die Ächtung des Grafen Heinrich, doch kam es im Jahre 994 auf Druck des Königs zu einer Aussöhnung zwischen Bischof und Graf. Bernward lud Graf Heinrich und dessen Ahnherrn, den Markgrafen Leopold von Österreich (976-994), nach Würzburg zum Besuch des Kilianifestes ein, und beide wurden von Bischof Bernward mit großen Ehren empfangen. Nach dem Besuch eines feierlichen Gottesdienstes im Dom am Vorabend von Kiliani kehrten Markgraf Leopold und Graf Heinrich in ihre gemeinsame Unterkunft zurück, wo sich Leopold mit einigen seiner adligen Gefolgsleute an den Spieltisch setzte. Ein Verwandter des von Graf Heinrich geblendeten Ritters schlich sich mit einer Armbrust vor das Haus und schoss durch ein Loch in der Wand in das Zimmer. Er hatte Graf Heinrich treffen wollen, an dem er sich für seinen Verwandten rächen wollte, traf aber den in der Sache völlig unschuldigen Markgrafen Leopold. Dieser starb drei Tage später an seiner Verwundung und wurde in Würzburg beerdigt,.
