Krefeld is in Duitsland vanaf de 18de eeuw het centrum van de textielindustrie. Met name zijde en fluweel werd er in de vele weverijen geproduceerd. Dat is waarschijnlijk de reden waarom een deel van de familie de Kimpe in de 19de eeuw vanuit Hel mond daar naar toe is getrokken. De familie behield de Belgische nationaliteit en na de eerste wereldoorlog vertrok men naar Rotterdam. Nog steeds is Krefeld het modecentrum van Duitsland.
