Gerhard werd als jongste kind geboren in een groot Hattems gezin. Hij woonde aan de Zuidwal.
Al jong had hij zijn passie voor tekenen en schilderen ontdekt en ging hij op pad om zijn liefde voor de natuur weer te geven. Als 14-jarige kwam hij in opleiding bij een huisschilder, hier zou hij later tijdelijk zijn beroep van gaan maken. Zijn grote liefde voor het vrij schilderen maakte echter dat hij besloot, op bijna 30-jarige leeftijd, zich geheel op de kunst toe te leggen.
