Op 12 januari 1901 organiseert ene Lodewijk Radix een schaatstocht.
Een dag later is er nogal wat commentaar in de krant te lezen: de prijzen bestonden uit spliterwten en spek. Dit oefende een grote aantrekkingskracht uit op de minder bedeelden. Er kwamen dan ook erg veel toeschouwers naar dit spektakel kijken. Er werd bijvoorbeeld ook melding gemaakt van arme sloebers die de tocht op blote voeten op het ijs aflegden.
