Notes about Jan van Dijk

Jan was een keuterboertje aan de Slaperdijk in Amerongen. De boerderij pachtte hij van de jonkheer van kasteel Amerongen. 2 keer per jaar moest hijde pacht betalen. Daarvoor ging hij te voet naar het kasteel. Na de betaling kreeg hij een sigaar die hij direct opstak en nog een om mee te nemenen de volgende dag zondag op te roken.

De oudste kleinzoon van Jan vertelt er het volgende over:
Ik wil niet zeggen, dat ik het naadje van de kous weet,maar wel dit:
Hij pachtte van de Graaf, of dat de zelfde persoon was als de Jonkheer van kasteel Amerongen betwijfel ik.
Hij hoefde niet helemaal naar kasteel Amerongen,maar naar het berghuisje, waar zitting gehouden werd voor de Overbergse pachters of huurders.
Verder vraag ik me af of dat niet een soort afbetaling was, want opa van Dijk heeft "het Hart" gekocht.
Hij was ook nog zoiets als in loondienst, als bosarbeider: Samen met nog meer huurders/pachters deden ze boswerk tussen de Dwarsweg en de Vaart, zoalshet Valleikanaal toen werd genoemd.

Opa van den Brandhof heeft bij mijn weten nooit gepacht maar gekocht.
Dat is het zo'n beetje wat ik weet,misschien heb je er wat aan.

Uit de geschiedenis van Kasteel Amerongen:
De laatste bewoners Godard Graaf van Aldenburg Bentinck vestigt zich in 1879 op Kasteel Amerongen en brengt het Huys opnieuw tot bloei. Hij huwt AugusteWilhelmine Louise Adrienne Gravin van Bylandt, die hem vier zonen en een dochter schenkt. Kasteel Amerongen wordt volgens moderne methoden beheerd.De graaf steunt de bevolking van Amerongen door agrarische projecten op te zetten, Godard geeft de bekende architect dr P.J.Cuypers opdracht veranderingenin hetHuys aan te brengen.
