Uit de doopgegevens blijkt niet dat deze Jan Schoenmaker later de echtgenoot zal zijn van Maria Ries. Er waren in Amsterdam waarschijnlijk veel mannen die Jan Schoenmaker heetten.
Maria Ries en een Jan Schoenmaker hebben samen kinderen ten doop gehouden. Dat staat vast. Maar of die Jan Schoenmaker is geboren in 1793 in Amsterdam (of in Brielle, zoals een bron in Gens Nostra wil) en of zijn ouders een Jan Schoenmaker en een Gesche Maria Gertsen, beiden uit Duitsland, waren is maar de vraag.
Er is een Jan Schoenmaker gedoopt op 18 april 1793, maar zonder context zijn die gegevens waardeloos.

      Ik heb in de doopboeken van Brielle geen Jan Schoenmaker, die gedoopt zou zijn in of omtrent 1793, gevonden. Ook in de trouwboeken heb ik geen "vader Schoenmaker" gevonden die, rond die tijd of in het voorgaande decennium, in ondertrouw is gegaan gevonden.

      In Amsterdam vond ik op exact de genoemde datum wel de doop van een Jan Schoenmaker, maar dat bewijst helemaal niets.
