Doordat Claas Veeckens nogal ontijdig overleed bleef zijn gezin van zeven kinderen achter zonder middelen van bestaan. Zijn vrouw Catharina Rijser werd niet of nauwelijks ondersteund door haar familie. De predikantenfamilie gedacht haar en haar bekommernissen in gebeden, maar echte steun bleef uit. Haar broer Jan bijvoorbeeld was niet onbemiddeld, maar hij verkoos zijn geld niet aan zijn behoeftige zuster en haar gezin te besteden. Ook haar vader was nu niet bepaald arm. Deze zuinige en weinig christelijke houding van haar predikantenfamilie had tot gevolg dat Catharina haar nog zeer jonge zonen Nicolaas en Hendrik op een levensgevaarlijke reis naar de koloniën moest sturen om daar hun fortuin te maken; Jan naar Suriname en Hendrik naar Oost-Indië.
Hendrik heeft veel moeite gedaan het contact met de familie, door middel van correspondentie, te onderhouden. Dit bleek een vruchteloze poging. Men schreef niet of nauwelijks terug.

Catharina Rijser, die, voor zover wij weten, nooit een brief van haar zoon Hendrik heeft beantwoord, stierf in 1800, waarna de behoeftigheid van haar kinderen nog toenam.

Het gezin werd, vanaf 1802, jarenlang door, in elk geval zoon Hendrik, die het fortuin inderdaad in de koloniën gevonden had, met geld ondersteund. De familieleden toonden hun dankbaarheid door slechts zelden een brief van Hendrik te beantwoorden. Ze lieten jarenlang niets van zich horen. Dat heeft hun trouwe bloedverwant, die zo veel van zijn familie hield, veel pijn gedaan.
