(Balthazar Huydecoper – 1740)
Balthazar Huydecoper was born in Amsterdam 10 April 1695 in a patrician family. At early age he lost both his parents. After his study and Grammar school period (1703-1713) he wrote his tragedies. After Arzases (1722), in which an experimental synthesis of French Classicist and Aristotelian dramaturgy was explored, Huydecoper became Regent of the municipal orphanage with the supervision over the municipal theatre (until 1725). Between 1725 and 1778, the year of his death, Huydecoper would occupy several public posts, leaving him the time he needed for his linguistic investigations. Before 1725 belles-lettres and theory of drama were his main interest. After publishing the prose translation of Horatius' (65-8 BC) Hekeldichten en brieven (1726), Huydecoper was requested to prepare a re-edition of Publius Ovidius Nazoos Herscheppinge. Vertaalt door J. van Vondel. (Amsterdam: Blaeu/Janssonius van Waesberge/Boom en Goethals, 1703), a translation by Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) of Ovidio's Metamorphoses, published earlier in 1671. In the period between 1726-1730 this study of Vondel resulted in the publication of his Proeve van taal- en dichtkunde; in vrijmoedige aanmerkingen op Vondels Vertaalde Herscheppingen van Ovidius [...]. (Amsterdam: Visscher en Tirion,1730).
