Notes about Mary Stuart , Queen of Scots

Maria I (Mary Stuart of Stewart) (8 december 1542, 8 februari 1587), ook bekend als Mary, Queen of Scots, regeerde over Schotland vanaf 14 december 1542 tot 24 juli 1567. Zij was de dochter van koning Jacobus (James) V Stuart en Marie de Guise. Maria Stuart is misschien de bekendste Schotse monarch, deels vanwege haar tragische levensgeschiedenis.

Gedurende korte tijd was zij gehuwd met Frans II van Frankrijk, en als dusdanig gedurende zeventien maanden koningin van Frankrijk, tot aan de vroegtijdige dood van haar echtgenoot. Op haar 18e was zij al weduwe.
Op 29 juli 1565 trouwde Maria onverwachts met Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, een afstammeling van koning Hendrik VII van Engeland.
Na de moord op Henry Stuart trouwde Maria met James Hepburn, beter bekend als Bothwell.

Maria I van Schotland wordt soms verward met haar nicht Maria I van Engeland, die ongeveer tegelijkertijd leefde (1516 - 1558), en tegelijkertijd met Mary, Queen of Scots regeerde. Door zware opstanden, die bedoeld waren om koningin Elisabeth I van Engeland te laten aftreden, kwam zij als gevangene terecht in de Tower te Londen. Twintig jaar later werd ze in kasteel Fotheringhay onthoofd.
