Bezit tal van landgoederen in Wallonië en stroomafwaarts langs de Maas.Ondersteunt zijn achterneef de Westfrankische koning Karel III 'deEenvoudige' in diens strijd tegen Eudes van 893 tot 897. Is eerst devoornaamste medewerker van koning Zwentibold wanneer deze Lotharingenals koninkrijk van zijn vader Arnulf heeft ontvangen in 895 (hijverkrijgt dan St. Servaas te Maastricht en treedt op als leke-abt vanEchternach), die echter weldra met hem breekt, hem St. Servaas ontneemtop 13 Mei 898 en hem tot tweemaal toe vergeefs belegert in zijn vesteDurfost. Wendt zich opnieuw tot Karel 'de Eenvoudige' die Aken enNijmegen verovert en Zwentibold tot vlucht dwingt. Erkent nadat dezelaatste gesneuveld is (13 Aug. 900) wel diens opvolger Lodewijk 'hetKind' en de toen aangestelde hertog Gebhard. Verwerft ook Stavelot in902 en opnieuw, St. Servaas. Wordt (ook in oorkonden) met verschillendetitels aangeduid (graaf, markgraaf, na 911 ook missus dominicus). Bezitin zijn laatste levensjaren ook nog St. Maximin (buiten Trier) enChèvremont (bij Luik).
