Zuiderweg was een zoon van de wagenmaker Markus Zuiderweg en IJktje Kuiper. Hij was gehuwd met Lammechien Smit, dochter van de bakker Jan Smit en Anje Hemmes uit Oude Pekela.

Zuiderweg was onderwijzer aan gemeenteschool 2 (school Geerts) in Oude Pekela. Hij maakte deel uit van verscheidene verenigingen. Zo was Zuiderweg jarenlang diaken bij de Ned. Herv. kerk, bestuurslid van de Nutsspaarbank en van de leesbibliotheek, terwijl hij voorts van 1942-1943 wethouder van de gemeente Oude Pekela is geweest.
