Johanna Ruhr werd op 25 juli 1877 geboren in Mechernich, een buurgemeente van Euskirchen vlak ten oosten van Aken. Zij was de derde echtgenote van David Bloemendaal. Deze was in 1902 met zijn tweede echtgenote van 's-Heerenberg naar Emmerik verhuisd. Nadat deze tweede echtgenote op een nog onbekende datum was overleden, hertrouwde Bloemendaal ergens in Pruisen met Johanna. In november 1935 kwam het echtpaar naar 's-Heerenberg, waar het woonde op het adres Klinkerstraat 46.

Op 11 mei 1943 werd Johanna getransporteerd vanuit Kamp Westerbork en op 14 mei 1943 vond zij de dood in het vernietigingskamp Sobibor in Oost-Polen. Zij was 65 jaar oud. Op dezelfde dag stierven in Sobibor haar man David, diens broer Manuel met echtgenote, het echtpaar Straus-Jacob en hun zoon Benno alsmede Saartje Hijmans en haar man. Van deze doden waren er zeven afkomstig uit 's-Heerenberg; het hoogste aantal op één dag ooit.

Johanna en haar man worden herdacht op het oorlogsmonument in 's-Heerenberg. Verder worden zij vermeld in het Digitaal Monument van de Joodse Gemeenschap, het Slachtofferregister van de Oorlogsgravenstichting en Yad Vashem's Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names.

De overlijdensakte van Johanna Ruhr kon pas zeven jaar na haar dood worden opgemaakt.

Haar overlijden is op 12 januari 1950 aangegeven in de gemeente Bergh. Dit gebeurde krachtens een wet uit juni 1949 betreffende het opmaken van overlijdensakten van vermisten. Als bewijs van het overlijden diende waarschijnlijk een officiële mededeling van de Commissie tot het doen van aangifte van overlijden van vermisten, zoals dat ook bij haar man het geval was, maar dit document is niet teruggevonden. Het overlijden van haar man was daar twee weken eerder al aangegeven.
