Blechhammer - Dwangarbeiderskamp en Concentratiekamp.

In de omgeving van het dorp Blechhammer lagen een aantal dwangarbeiders- kampen waar in totaal zo’n 50.000 dwangarbeiders zaten. Eén van deze kampen werd later omgevormd tot concentratiekamp Blechhammer, een buitenkamp van het concentratiekamp KZ Auschwitz III Monowitz. Daar vervaardigde de Oberschlesische Hydrierwerke uit steenkool benzine en was het grootste dwangarbeiderskamp van de "Organisation Schmelt". Dat was een groot industrieel complex in de voormalige provincie (Landkreis) Kozlé (Ned. Cosel/ Kozel) in Opper-Silezië, bestaande uit tientallen verschillende kampen met tot 50.000 (voornamelijk Joodse) dwangarbeiders. Kamp Blechhammer is in 1940 opgericht.

Het concentratiekamp had een eigen crematorium, die deels bewaard is gebleven, net zoals veel andere betonnen resten. Op 21 januari 1945 werd het kamp ontruimd, waarbij meteen 200 gevangenen werden vermoord. Ongeveer 10.000 gevangenen uit deze omgeving werden op dodenmars gezet richting het westen, waarbij nog vele honderen gevangenen omkwamen.
