WALL (Hermann Theodor Friedrich Karl Emil Wilhelm August Casimir von de), geb. 30 Mrt. 1807 te Giessen, gest. 2 Mei 1873 te Riouw. Eerst was hij, sedert 1825, 2e luitenant bij de dragonders in Pruisen, doch in 1828 ging hij als sergeant bij de oost-indische cavalerie naar Batavia; in 1831 werd hij kommandant van het korps inl. cavalerie te Cheribon. In 1834 ging hij in civielen dienst over en werd civiel-gezaghebber te Soekadana, in 1845 kommies van den assistent-resident van Pontianak. Een jaar later werd hij civiel-gezaghebber van Koetei en de Oostkust van Borneo. Gedurende 1846-52 maakte hij belangrijke tochten in Oost-Borneo. In 1853 vergezelde hij den commissaris Prins naar Borneo's Westkust en in 1855 keerde hij naar Batavia terug. Daar werd hij ass.-resident der 1e kl. en kreeg de opdracht een maleische spraakkunst en een maleisch woordenboek te vervaardigen. Hiertoe begaf hij zich naar Riouw en van 1860 tot 1862 naar Malakka. Later klom hij op tot resident.

Zijne hoofdwerken zijn zijne verhandeling Over de vormveranderingen der Maleische taal (Verh. Bat. Gen. XXXI) en zijn Maleisch- Nederlandsch Woordenboek, dat Neubronner van der Tuuk vereenvoudigde en in 3 deelen uitgaf, terwijl van Ronkel er in 1897 een supplement op uitgaf. Verder vertaalde hij het Regl. o.h. beleid der Regeering in het maleisch (1852) en schreef verscheidene verhandelingen van taalkundigen aard in het Tijdschr. v.h. Bat. Genootschap. Ook de Maleische samenspraken van Hadji Ibrahim werden met zijn hulp en voorlichting geschreven.
