Jan heeft in zijn jeugd ernstig last gehad van tbc en was daardoor deels gehandicapt geraakt.
Na school kwam Jan als leerling in dienst bij oom Jan, voormalig vleeschhouwer, nadien handelaar in behangselpapier in de Boekhorststraat. Toen Jan een eigen winkel in behangselpapier wilde beginnen in groeiend Den Haag, verhinderde oom Jan elke vestiging in Den Haag. Jan startte een winkel in behangselpapier zonder toilet in Delft Peperstraat 8, hij mocht gebruik maken van het toilet van dhr. gehuwd met Schulte aan de overkant.
De zaak rendeerde te weinig en Jan komt alsnog, met medewerking van zijn vader Dorus later terug in Den Haag en wel in de Weimarstraat 128/130 onder de naam Bennebroek Thzn, huwt Lenie Kroon en woont DH sinds 12.10.1932 Weimarstr.154 ( niet boven zijn winkel in behangselpapier nr 128) maar boven de broodwinkel van Hus Karel. Het gezin woont later Galileïstr. 179 en tenslotte (kinderen waren al lang uit huis) in 1975 Kornalijnhorst 140.
Als bedrijfsleider was werkzaam dhr. Ebbing (Teylerstraat), hij belast met het personeel (behangers). Als opvolger in de zaak kwam in beeld de heer Romijn wonend te Scheveningen.
Er was ook nog winkelbediende dhr. den Otter, hij woonde in Scheveningen.
Na het overlijden van Jan claimde de heer Romijn de zaak en onroerend goed. Deze claim werd afgewezen; de winkel gesloten en het bedrijf beëindigd
