Het geslacht Aarts is een Rooms-Katholieke familie, afkomstig uit Noord-Brabant, met name uit de Meijerij en de Kempen. De oorsprong van het geslacht ligt in de 16e eeuw in Gerwen, gemeente Nuenen. De naam Aarts is een zogenaamd patroniem en betekent Aart’s zoon, ofwel de zoon van Aart. De bewezen stamvader en naamgever van het geslacht is dan ook Aart Jan Jacobs. Hij moet geboren zijn omstreeks 1630. In 1676 was Aart Jan Jacobs schepen van Neunen en uit die tijd is ook een handtekening van hem bewaard gebleven. Aart Jan Jacobs kreeg vier zonen, die als eerste generatie de naam “Aarts” dragen, zonen van Aart.
