In 1890 richtte P.L. Engelenberg de Eerste Nederlandsche Fabriek van Kunstbloemen op in Haarlem. Kunstbloemen werden vooral gebruikt in kerken op de altaren en in donkere vertrekken zoals de hal of gang. In de loop der jaren werden verschillende soorten kunstbloemen verkocht. Wasbloemen – papieren bloemen bedekt met een dun laagje was – waren relatief duur. Een goedkopere variant waren de kunstbloemen van stof, fluweel of zijde.

In 1917 begon de fabriek kleine bloemen te verkopen. Deze waren erg in trek doordat de ‘Nederlandsche Centrale Vereeniging tot bestrijding der Tuberculose’ jaarlijks op de ‘bloemendagen’ soortgelijke bloemen verkocht voor het goede doel. De fabriek verkocht dit jaar 700.000 stuks van deze kleine speldbloempjes. In 1928 verkochten zij 2.500.000 bloempjes en speldjes.

Vooral tegen kerstmis is de vraag naar kunsthulst, de mistletoe en kaarsenhouders (onder andere voor in de kerstboom) groot.
