Evert bracht Joodse mensen van Amsterdam naar Hilversum om onder te duiken. Zijn ouders hadden ook Joodse onderduikers in huis. Hij is gearresteerd in Amsterdam, overgebracht naar de Euterpestraat en vervolgens in een overvalwagen gebracht naar de Weteringschans. Van daar is hij naar Kamp Amersfoort gebracht.

Op 6 september 1944 is hij met de trein via Hengelo (heeft hij nog een brief uit de trein gegooid) naar de verschillende kampen in Duitsland gebracht.
Uiteindelijk is hij in Concentratiekamp Wöbbelin terecht gekomen, waar de omstandigheden onmenselijk waren. Ze moesten het kamp zelf bouwen, er was helemaal niets en velen stierven. Op 2 mei 1945 zijn ze daar bevrijd door de Amerikaanse 82e luchtlandingsdivisie, zij hadden nog nooit zoiets gezien, overal lagen lijken.

Evert is met nog 5 Nederlandse krijgsgevangenen uit het kamp richting station Ludwiglust gelopen, dat hebben ze niet bereikt omdat ze totaal uitgeput waren. Ze kregen onderdak bij een boer in het hooi, vlakbij het kamp. Evert was daar al heel erg ziek, hij had een ontsteking aan zijn kaak, zijn keel zat dicht en hij ijlde. Ze hebben hem toen naar een Amerikaans veldhospitaal gebracht en daar is hij waarschijnlijk overleden.
