Sybren Klazes maakte in 1746 al deel uit van de Hernhutter gemeente in Akkrum. In 1752 werd er in Akkrum een kerkje op de Kleef gebouwd, waar door vrienden zelf 500 gulden bijeen werd gebracht. Door de gemeente in Zeist werd de rest, zo'n 600 gulden, afbetaald. Tegenwoordig is er restaurant "de Akkrummer Jol" gevestigd.
De kleine groep Hernhutters uit Terhorne bouwde een "gemeente scheepje met drie zeilen" voor tien personen, want men kon Akkrum alleen over water bereiken.
In een ledenlijst van 1767 van de Hernhutters staat dat Sybren op dat moment 60 jaar oud is, hij heeft een "treurig hart", zijn vrouw is al 20 jaar "narrisch", en zijn enige dochter van 30 jaar oud is "nur halb bescheit".
In 1797 werd de Hernhutter gemeente in Akkrum, na ruim vijftig jaar, opgeheven.

Sybren was scheepstimmerman bij zijn vader in Terhorne en begon in 1755 met zijn broer Zymen ( ook Hernhutter) een scheepswerf in Akkrum. De helling was aan de Lebbedijk (Tuskenbrege).
