Jogchum leerde Jantje kennen bij Suster vd Vegt, waar Beppe Jantje werkte. ze trouwden in de strenge winter van 1890, waar het op 28 november al tien dagen had gevroren. op de trouwdag kwam de boot vast te zitten in het drijfijs, waardoor de huwelijksvoltrekking pas om 7:00 uur kon plaatsvinden.

Het vroor toen 100 dagen achter elkaar, en het vrachtvervoer werd met de slede gedaan.

Het eerste kind vabn Jogchum en Jantje, op 11 mei 1891 geboren, is vroeg overleden. tijdens het spelen met een speelgoedscheepje, viel Sybren en kreeg de mast via de mond in de hersenen. Hij overleed 11 november 1892
