In 1563 verhuisde Bruegel van Antwerpen naar Brussel, waar hij trouwde met Mayken Coecke, dochter van zijn vroegere leermeester Pieter Coecke van Aelst en Mayken Verhulst. Volgens de huwelijksregisters van de Antwerpse kathedraal vond de ondertrouw plaats op 25 juli 1563, wat allicht betekent dat de schilder op dat ogenblik nog in Antwerpen woonde. Het huwelijk zelf werd kort daarna ingezegend in de Kapellekerk te Brussel. De akte vermeldt geen datum, maar het is aannemelijk dat de trouw en verhuizing in augustus plaatsvonden.
