      Georges Follman

      Georges Follman werd geboren op 16 juni 1920 te Antwerpen. Hij was van opleiding violist, maar leerde later ook piano, alto en klarinet spelen. Hij wilde gewoon van alles op de hoogte zijn. Rond 1950 begon zijn aandacht naar het blaasorkest te gaan. Na enkele jaren dirigeerde hij zes blaasorkesten uit de hoogste afdelingen waaronder ook dat van Herenthout.
      In 1956 nam Follman het zeer kleine muziekfonds Scherzando over dat nauwelijks 35 werken telde. In 1979 telde het fonds al zowat 1100 blaasmuziekwerken. In 1966 kon onze dirigent de Gemeentelijke Muziekschool in Herenthout uit de grond stampen. Ze werd in 1969 officieel erkend en telde in 1978 zowat 800 leerlingen. Toen moest hij het directeurschap opgeven.
      In 1972 mag onze dirigent als gastdirigent van de Self Defence Marine Tokyo-Band optreden in de Shibuya-Hall, een van de mooiste en grootste concertzalen van Tokio. Hij brengt er oa zijn “Eerste symfonie voor blaasorkest”.
      In 1975 zal hij ook het Kempisch Jeugdfanfare Orkest stichten. Met dit orkest, bestaande uit een zeventigtal jongens en meisjes uit een twaalftal Kempense gemeentes (waarvan ook velen uit Herenthout), behaalde hij talrijke successen in België, Nederland en de USA. Ook een plaatopname getuigt van de kwaliteit van deze groep.
      En dat de samenwerking met onze fanfare steeds opperbest is verlopen, getuigt een interview met hem in 1987: “De beste dirigent kan maar resultaat bereiken als zijn korps met hem meewerkt”. Hij noemt onze fanfare - op dat moment nog de enige onder zijn hoede - zijn ‘elitekorps’.
