    A la suite d'un ermite, retiré dans les bois de Sologne et que la tradition nomme Viâtre, un village semble se constituer autour de son tombeau (la crypte actuelle). Un arbre issu de son cercueil fait de tremble serait à l'origine du nom primitif: Tremblevy, en latin tremuli vicus, le village du tremble.

    Au moyen âge, plusieurs seigneuries voient le jour. L'une d'entre elles, la châtellenie de Tremblevy avait droit de haute et basse justice.

    Au XVème siècle, cette châtellenie devient définitivement (en 1453), la propriété de Charles d'Orléans (le poète) et entre dans le domaine royal, à l'avènement de son fils Louis XII, après l'extinction des Valois directs en 1498.

    En 1515, François 1er part en campagne au nord de l'Italie, c'est la victoire mémorable de Marignan. Durant cette campagne, un homme, entre autres, s'est distingué, un Allemand, Wolfgang Eberhard comte de Lupfen, le capitaine des lansquenets du roi. Pour le récompenser, François 1er lui attribue la châtellenie de Tremblevy.

    Le blason de Tremblevy, union du comte de Lupfen et de dame Jeanne Cléret son épouse, devient les armoiries de notre village.

    Au cours du XVIIème siècle, le nom du village s'est transformé pour devenir Tremblevif, probablement à cause des "fièvres intermittentes" (ou paludisme) qui sévissait alors.

    Au XIXème siècle, ce nom est devenu difficile à porter et à la demande de la commune, le village prit le nom de Saint-Viâtre en 1854.
