Notes about Joseph Richard SIZOO

Rev. Mr. Sizoo came to the pulpit of this historic church in 1924. Native of the Netherlands, he was born May 15, 1884, son of Dirk and Elizabeth (Bastmeyer) Sizoo, and was brought to the United States at the age of seven years, in 1891.

Here' he graduated from Auburn Park High School in 1903, took the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Hope College, at Holland, Michigan, 1907; received the degree of Master of Arts in 1910; and that of Doctor of Divinity (honorary) in 1925, a year after coming to Washington. It was in 1910 that Rev. Sizoo was ordained to the ministry of the Reformed Church. Until 1911 he served as a missionary in India, served as minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Walden, New York, until 1917, was minister of the Second Church of Somerville, New Jersey, from then until 1924, and in May of 1924 was called to the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church at the capital city, where he continues in charge.

During the summer of 1923, Rev. Sizoo acted as minister of the American Church at The Hague, revisiting his native land.

He conducted the funeral services for William Jennings Bryan, July 31, 1925; and concerning this historic event, he has written:

One of the very impressive moments in the history OJ this church occurred some summers ago when the ureat Commoner, William Jennings Bryan, lay dead. When hisbody was brought into the church, thousands of people were waiting in line for an opportunity to view him in his flag-draped casket. That procession never ended night or day from Wednesday until Friday. From the pulpit there were spoken to his bereaved family and innumerable friends, words of comfort and words of praise which he so richly deserved. Mr. Bryan had something to do with my entrance into the Christian ministry. He always worshipped in this church whenever he was in Washington. And it was singularly appropriate that he should be carried from it to his final resting place in Arlington.

When the United States entered the World War, Rev. Sizoo joined the Y. M. C. A. service as chaplain and went overseas. His wartime duty done, he resumed the course of his career in its dominant threads which have spun out to distinction and renown. He was for four years superintendent and member of the board of the New Biunswick Theological Seminary. A Republican, he supports the principles of the party steadfastly. He belongs to the Cosmos and Chevy Chase and National Press clubs of Washington, and the Raritan Valley Country Club of Somerville, New Jersey. Rev. Sizoo married, in 1915, Florence May Mapes, of Goshen, New York; and they have two children: Joseph Mapes and William Mapes. The family residence is at No. 3100 Cathedral Avenue, Nortbwest,Washington, District of Columbia.

However, the information found on US citizen manifests is sparse compareDe inhoud, die hier gevonden kan worden, is echter beknopt vergeleken met paspoort aanvragen.
