De toevoeging vulgo was gebruikelijk in de 18e en 19e eeuw, bijvoorbeeld om iemand nauwkeuriger te identificeren in een inschrijving in kerkregisters. Het wordt in de 21e eeuw ook ophet platteland gebruikt om boerderijen aan te duiden, ongeacht de familienaam van de respectievelijke eigenarenfamilies. Dergelijke "vulgonenamen" bevatten vaak verwijzingen naar de economische functies van de respectieve boerderij (bijvoorbeeld Schlossseppl als boerderij in een eerder kasteel of Gratzen naar een eerdere administratieve of verdedigingsfunctie). In Oostenrijk is het gebruik van de"huisnaam" of de "vulgaire naam" nog steeds wijdverbreid. Dit gaat zo ver dat de officiële achternaam niet in gebruik is en mensen elkaar in alledaagse gesprekken met hun huisnaam aanspreken. Deofficiële achternaam is alleen verplicht voor autoriteiten en kantoren.

Vaak zijn er ook verwijzingen naar vorige eigenaren: "Franz Schulz vulgo Drabosenig". De naam van de persoon was Franz Schulz, maar hij was getrouwd geweest in of had het Drabosenig-Hof overgenomen. Onder deze naam (de Drabosenig-boer) was hij in de omgeving bekend (huisnaam). In deze context verwijst het woord naar de algemene naam van de boerderij (in tegenstelling tot de naam van de eigenaar, voor wie de boerderijnaam als bijnaam wordt gebruikt).
