    Diederik VI (Diederik IV volgens een andere telling)[1] (1185-1260) was de oudste zoon van graaf Diederik V van Kleef en Margaretha van Holland. Rond 1198 volgde hij zijn vader op als minderjarige en werd de echte stichter van de staat Kleef. Diederik bevorderde de nederzettingen en stichtte vele gemeenten en steden, zoals Kleef, Kalkar en Wesel. In de Loonse oorlog koos hij in 1203 partij voor zijn nicht Ada. Hij stelde zich op als een trouw aanhanger van de keizer Frederik II. In de Vlaams-Henegouwse Successieoorlog van 1248, koos hij partij tegen het Huis Dampierre en verwierf zo Gehlen, Castrop, Mengede, Hülchrat, het bosgraafschap Wesel en de voogdij van Willibrord in Wesel en Dinslaken en verstevigde zijn positie aan de Beneden-Rijn.
