Zoltán (died 947 or 948), also known as Zolta, Zsolt or Solt, according to the mediaeval chronicles, was the third Grand Prince of the Hungarians from 907 to 947.[1]

    Life

He was the fifth and youngest son of Grand Prince Árpád,[2] who died about 907. The 13th century Gesta Hungarorum by Bele Regis Notarius (Anonymous) name Zolta as the successor of his father, and also mentions that he in 904 had married a daughter of Menumorut, the local military leader in the region of Bihar (Romanian: Biharea) at the time of the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin (Hungarian: Honfoglalás).

Later researchers like Györffy György questioned his position as a ruler and prefer other sons of Árpád. In any case, his leadership meant much less than with his father, as during his time, several tribal leaders such as legendary Szabolcs of the Csák dynasty held most of the power. In this era, Hungarian raids (kalandozások) were common in much of Europe. Zoltán may have been the Hungarian prince captured by the German king Henry the Fowler near Werla Castle in 924, as mentioned in the Res gestae saxonicae by the Saxon chronicler Widukind of Corvey.

According to the principle of agnatic seniority, Zoltán upon his death was succeeded by his nephew Fajsz, son of his elder brother Jutas.
  • He died in the year 947, he was 51 years old.
  • A child of Árpâd van Hongarije
