    Hij volgde zijn vader in 997 op als graaf van Guînes. Rudolf was spilziek en voerde een tiranniek bestuur met zware heffingen. Omdat hij bevreesd was voor opstanden verbood hij het dragen van wapens, zelfs de knotsen van boeren waren verboden. Vermoedelijk heeft hij hierdoor zijn bijnaam gekregen (massue is Frans voor knots). Rudolf stierf tijdens een toernooi in Parijs. Hij viel zwaargewond van zijn paard en zijn lichaam werd door de honden aan stukken gereten en in de Seine geworpen.
