    Albrecht I (1236-1279), bijg. de Grote, was een zoon van hertog Otto I van Brunswijk. Na de dood van zijn vader werd hij hertog van Brunswijk en Lüneburg, samen met zijn broer Johan. In 1269 werd het gebied verdeeld tussen de broers. Johan kreeg Lüneburg met de stad Hannover en Albrecht Brunswijk en Wolfenbüttel met de gebieden Calenberg en Göttingen. Na zijn dood werd Brunswijk verdeeld in Grubenhagen, Göttingen en Brunswijk
