Jaap Barendregt was, zoals een echte Feyenoorder betaamt, een jongen van Rotterdam-Zuid. Hij kwam ook uit een echte Feyenoord-familie. Zijn vader was een broer van lngen Barendregt, de terreinknecht van Feyenoord aan de Dordtsestraatweg/Kromme Zandweg. Toch was hij eerst lid van DCL (De Charloissche Leeuw). Op 1 augustus 1925 werd hij werkend lid van Feyenoord. Jaap Barendregt speelde ruim tien jaar in het eerste, altijd in de voorhoede en voornamelijk als 'centervoor', Hij werd één keer in het Nederlands Elftal gekozen. Op 17 maart 1929 speelde hij in Amsterdam tegen Zwitserland. Nederland won met 3-2. Clubgenoot Van Heel speelde zijn 20ste interland. Ook in 1930 was het de bedoeling dat Jaap Barendregt voor het Nederlands Elftal zou spelen. Door een vreemde speling van het lot vergisten de heren van de Keuze Commissie zich en kozen Wim Groenendijk, die bij Feyenoord naast Jaap speelde. Nederland speelde op 2 november 1930 weer tegen Zwitserland. Nederland verloor in Zürich met 6-3 en Groenendijk speelde geen al te beste wedstrijd. Jaap Barendregt werd daarna nooit meer geselecteerd voor het Nederlands Elftal Jaap Barendregt was, nadat hij stopte met voetballen, binnen de vereniging lid van de Junior-Commissie. Hij overleed 49-jarige leeftijd aan een ernstige ziekte.
