Het geslacht Bax heeft de troebelen van de 16e eeuw moeilijk verwerkt, want de meest vooraanstaanden namen de wijk naar Breda en omgeving en stonden in hoog aanzien bij het huis van Oranje. Zij kleefden het protestantisme aan en werden met hoge posten bekleed. Bij het einde van de 16e eeuw verdwenen hun heerlijke rechten over Weelde.
