    Jentje Ales Bakker was 7 jaar toen zijn vader overleed, hij was bijna 10 jaar toen zijn moeder Geertje Sybrens van der Werff overleed. Waarschijnlijk was zij ziek, want op 6 augustus 1880 wordt Jentje ales opgenomen in de weesinrichting Neerbosch bij Nijmegen. Dit was indertijd het grootste particuliere weeshuis in Nederland gesticht door de evangelist Johannes van 't Lindenhout. De wezen konden er gratis opgenomen worden. Armbesturen en diaconieën uit het hele land zagen een goedkope mogelijkheid om van de aan hun zorgen toevertrouwde wezen af te komen. Weldra was het huis in de Lange Brouwerstraat overvol en zocht men elders naar ruimte.
