    Achtergrond
    Piet Stokhof was onderofficier bij het Korps Mariniers. Op 3 mei 1940 keerde hij uit Nederlands-Indië terug. Vier dagen later werd hij naar Rotterdam gestuurd. Hier werd hij op 11 mei, één dag na het begin van de oorlog, tijdens gevechten door een long geschoten.

    Na een jaar te zijn verpleegd in herstellingsoord Kareol in Bloemendaal, kreeg hij een aanstelling als brugwachter in Groningen. Toen hij zich in mei 1943 moest melden voor terugkeer in Duitse krijgsgevangenschap, dook hij onder in Wervershoof.

    Verzetsactiviteiten
    In Wervershoof werd Stokhof actief voor de Landelijke Organisatie voor Hulp aan Onderduikers. Naast koeriersdiensten en het rondbrengen van bonkaarten, was hij behulpzaam bij het maken van valse persoonsbewijzen en het verspreiden van de illegale bladen De Wacht en De Nieuwspomp.

    In 1944 organiseerde hij in Wervershoof en omgeving de Ordedienst (OD); een landelijke illegale organisatie die voor een deel was ontstaan in militaire kringen. Vanaf september behoorde hij tot de staf van de Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten in Westfriesland.

    Arrestatie en moord
    In januari 1945 werd de hele illegale organisatie in Wervershoof als gevolg van verraad door vermoedelijk een lokale kruidenier en zijn dochter opgerold. Stokhof werd onder hevig verzet gearresteerd door de Grüne Polizei. Via Medemblik en Alkmaar werd hij overgebracht naar het Huis van Bewaring in Amsterdam en op de lijst van Todeskandidaten gezet die in aanmerking kwamen voor fusillering bij represailles.

    Op 8 maart werd hij als represaille voor de - overigens onbedoelde - aanslag op de Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer in Nederland Rauter met 52 andere verzetsmensen bij de Amsteldijk gefusilleerd. Hun lichamen werden op bevel van de Duitsers provisorisch begraven in massagraven in de duinen bij Overveen.
