    In 1940 was Albert machinist aan boord van het stoomschip 'Maas'. Wegens de oorlog was en bleef het schip buiten de Nederlandse wateren. Op 4 september vertrok het van Sunderland met bestemming St. Laurens Rivier. Vanaf 7 september voeren de schepen in een konvooi van tien schepen dat tot buiten de Ierse Westkust werd geëscorteerd. Midden in de nacht werd een ontploffing waargenomen op het eerste schip en even daarna werd de 'Maas' midscheeps geraakt door een torpedo. Binnen 20 seconden was het schip gebroken en in de golven verdwenen. Van de opvarenden waren slechts twee overlevenden, waaronder de neef van Jacob Wever cq. Opa Wever, Bovenkerk/Amstelveen

    Deze zelfde Jacob heeft in 1934 getracht een eventueel legaat uit de erfenis van zijn oma Antje Ooijevaar te verkrijgen. Dit is kennelijk niet gelukt, want in de jaren vijftig hebben zijn nabestaanden nogmaals een poging gedaan die mislukt moet zijn, omdat de verjaringstermijn inmiddels was verstreken.
