    Als los arbeider onderhield hij de wallen langs de spoorrails en baggerde de sloten uit. Behalve in de winter, dan had de NS geen werk voor hem. In de winter moest het gezin rondkomen van de ‘werklozensteun’ van fl 2,50 (€ 1,14) per week. Dat geld kreeg je niet zomaar, daarvoor moest je als werkloze wel sneeuw ruimen in het dorp en de omgeving!

    Eind 1946 werd Manus Jonker ziek. Ze woonden toen in het huisje aan de Kerkstraat 37 in Wognum. Hij had leukemie (bloedkanker) en overleed op 66-jarige leeftijd, op 27 mei 1947

    In zijn vrije tijd was Manus voorzitter van de vakbond, de Nederlandse Rooms-katholieke Landarbeidersbond "Sint Deus Dedit". De bond is opgericht in 1904, ging later over in de Voedingsbond FNV en tegenwoordig zou hij kaderlid zijn geweest van FNV Bondgenoten.

    Jantjes dood greep Manus erg aan. Vanaf die tijd werd hij stil en teruggetrokken. Hij veranderde in een norse man, zo herinnert mijn moeder zich. Daarna ging Grietje dood. Ze was 10 toen ze overleed aan TBC.

    Ook was hij betrokken bij de "Bond zonder naam", die in 1938 werd opgericht door pater Henry de Greeve. Elke zaterdagavond om 8 uur verzorgde pater de Greeve voor de KRO het radioprogramma `Lichtbakens´, waarin hij opriep om een bond van naastenliefde te vormen. Die oproep viel in zulke goede aarde dat er binnen 3 dagen 15.000 mensen mee wilden doen. Van pater de Greeve komt de spreuk: Verbeter de wereld, begin bij jezelf! Die "Bond zonder naam" bestaat nog steeds!
