Voorzitter van de afscheidingsbeweging, in de strijd voor de onafhankelijkheid van Papenburg van het Huis Landsberg-Velen in 1848.Hij voerde onderhandelingen met de landheer,die erg lang duurden. Papenburg werd in 1853 onafhankelijk. Voor zijn verdienste werd er in 1954 een straat naar hem genoemd; Hermann-Lange StraÏe
