    DE OMNIBUSDIENST TUSSEN RHENEN EN VEENENDAAL-DE KLOMP
    Onder OUD(heidkundig) NIEUWS elders in dit nummer van
    Oud Rhenen kwam reeds de omnibusdienst ter sprake, die
    er eind 19e eeuw bestond tussen Rhenen en het station
    De Klomp bij Veenendaal.
    Van het woord "omnibus" zijn de latere benamingen "autobus"
    of kortweg "bus" afgeleid. Een "omnibus" was een
    langwerpig rijtuig voor passagiers- en goederenvervoer
    met vaste trajecten en vertrektijden en werd meestal door
    meerdere paarden getrokken.
    Dit bracht de Rhenense logement- en stalhouder Albertus
    van Altena, geb.Veenendaal 2.3.1832, er toe reeds in 1856
    vergunning aan te vragen om een omnibusdienst te mogen
    openen tussen Rhenen (via Elst/Veenendaal) en Station De
    Klomp. Een dergelijke vergunning werd door het Ministerie
    van Binnenlandsche Zaken per beschikking van 2 mei 1867
    (No 276, 6e Afdeling) verleend (of werd deze verlengd?)
    aan A.van Altena en E.Baars; deze laatste was karman te
    Rhenen.
