De familienaam Vermaas, wordt in vroeger akten ook als Vermaes geschreven.

In een aantal stambomen wordt  Dirk Pieterse Vermaas als echtgenoot van Josina van Iwaarden genoemd. Dit is kennelijk gebaseerd op gegevens van de genealogische werkgroep Tholen. Deze stelde het zgn 'stramien Nieuwaerden/van Iwaarde' samen. Nader onderzoek wijst uit dat deze naam niet juist kan zijn. Doop- en overlijdensdata stemmen overeen, zodat persoonsverwisseling uitgesloten lijkt.

Voorvader van Dirk Vermaas is Jacob Hendrikszn Vermaas, gehuwd met Susanne Dirkse Duijn (ook  Duijm).  ( En eerder gehuwd met Huybrijna Hectors.) Op basis van homoniem ligt Dirk Jacobse Vermaas eveneens voor de hand.  In de ondertrouwakte (13-12-1710) uit Stavenisse wordt Derk Jacobsen Vermaas vermeld.
