De 1e Thuisreis die op 8 december 1945 vanuit Singapore vertrok, kwam op 1 januari 1946 met het aantal van 3800 man in Southampton aan.

Vanuit Singapore vertrok het schip voor die 1e thuisgreis met aan boord de eerste grote groep repatrianten, die in de woelige periode na de Japanse capatulatie in 1945 naar Nederland wensten terug te keren.
Deze 1e reis eindigde voor de Nieuw Amsterdam echter niet in Nederland maar in Southampton, waar alle repatrianten van boord gingen. De reden hiervoor was dat de Noordzee nog vol lag met magnetische mijnen uit de 2e wereldoorlog.
Aangezien de Nieuw Amsterdam nog een vrij nieuw, goed en vooral kostbaar schip was, wilde men dit kapitale schip niet aan deze overtocht wagen en omdat er nog genoeg zo goed als afgeschreven schepen voorhanden waren, koos men er voor om het laatstestuk af te leggen met de Almanzora van de Royal Mail Lines en het hospitaalschip de Atlantis .

Het schip de Almonzora werd gebouwd in 1915 en had er zijn langste tijd ruimschoots op zitten, zij vervoerde de ongeveer 1800 gezonde overgebleven repatrianten op hun laatste stuk van de reis verdeeld over 2 reizen.

De 1e reis vanuit Southampton vertrok op 01-01-1946, waarna zij op 03-01-1946 in Amsterdam aan kwam en de 2e reis vanuit Southampton op 04-01-1946 met de aankomst in Amsterdam op 05-01-1946.
