Ben van Meerendonk was een zeer bekende fotograaf, er is nog een straat in het stadsdeel zeeburg in Amsterdam naar hem vernoemd.

Hij werkte van 1945 tot 1969 als fotojournalist met zijn 'Algemeen Hollands Fotopersbureau' bij verschillende media zoals De Waarheid, Het Vrije Volk, De Tijd, Trouw, Het Parool en De Telegraaf. Hij is de mede-oprichter en organisator van World Press Photo en hij won driemaal de Zilveren Camera. In 1988 ontving hij de Gouden Speld en het ereteken van Amsterdam.
