Jan Hendrik Donker Curtius (1813-1879) arriveerde als opperhoofd te Deshima in 1852 en werd de eerste diplomatische vertegenwoordiger van Nederland in Japan.

Als opperhoofd van Deshima bracht Jan Hendrik Donker Curtius een jaarlijks ceremonieel bezoek aan Edo (het huidige Tokyo) om eer te betonen aan het keizerlijk hof. Gedurende zijn laatste bezoek in 1885 kwam hij in bezit van een collectie van 111 gedrukte boeken (blokdrukken) vooral over 'Rangaku' of 'Nederlandse kennis' ; Nederlands-Japanese woordenboeken, Nederlandse grammatica boeken, en Japanse vertalingen van Nederlandse werken over geneeskunde, wetenschap en technologie.
