Personalia Pieter Kooistra werd op 24 juni 1922 te Leeuwarden geboren als jongste kind als in het gezin van vader Broer Kooistra (* Leeuwarden, 18 augustus 1881. 22 juli 1953), van beroep zuivelbewerker en moeder Antje Dijkstra (* Leeuwarden,10 augustus 1880. 17 november 1969), van beroep naaister. Na hun huwelijk te Leeuwarden op 6 augustus 1910 kreeg het gezin drie kinderen. Een dochter Marijke (*1912. 1962) een dochter Baukje, (*1914. 1926) en tenslotte zoon Pieter. Deze laatste huwde driemaal. De eerste keer met Doutze de Vries te Sneek in 1947. Hij bekeerde zich gedurende dat huwelijk tot het Gereformeerde geloof. In later jaren heeft hij daar bewust afstand van genomen, zonder overigens het geloof in een hoger iets te ontkennen. Nadat dit eerste huwelijk gestrand was ontmoette hij in 1958 Gre Mannes, waarmee hij in 1960 trouwde. Ook dit huwelijk liep stuk in 1966. Eind zestiger jaren leerde hij Rosalie J. de Neve kennen waarmee hij trouwde. Maar ook dit huwelijk werd in 1977 ontbonden. De huwelijken bleven kinderloos. Na aanvankelijk lange tijd in Amsterdam gewoond te hebben, vestigde hij zich midden 70-er jaren in het in 1972 door hem gekochte oude veerhuis aan de Waaldijk te Varik. Pieter is op 5 mei 1998 in het ziekenhuis te Tiel overleden.
De mens Pieter vertelde dat hij zijn hele leven het gevoel had, dat hij bij niemand hoorde en gek genoeg tegelijker tijd bij iedereen. Dat verklaart zijn sociale betrokkenheid bij alles wat naar zijn gevoel onrechtvaardig was. Het is dan niet te verwonderen dat hij zich samen met de eveneens Varikse kunstenaar en goede vriend Willem den Ouden verzette tegen de manier waarop de dijkverzwaring langs de Waal werd uitgevoerd, waarmee ook zijn woning in aanraking zou komen. Zijn gehele leven als kunstenaar had hij het gevoel gehad dat een kunstwerk een middel was tot bewustwording van eenheid in verscheidenheid, zoals het leven zelf is en wilde dit ideaal dichter bij de gewone mensen brengen. Als schrijver legde hij bijna dagelijks zijn ideeën en gedachten over allerlei maatschappelijke waarden en normen in honderden gedichten en opgeschreven gedachtespinsels vast. Hij bleef tot op zijn sterfbed schrijven. Hij stierf in het ziekenhuis te Tiel aan een longbloeding op Bevrijdingsdag 5 mei 1998. De vrouw met wie hij de laatste tien maanden van zijn leven een innige relatie had opgebouwd, Anna van Wonderen, was onafgebroken aan zijn zijde geweest. Via haar deelde hij zijn laatste wensen en inzichten mee. Schrijvend in de lucht, op papier en op zijn laken. Zijn as werd ingevolge zijn wens door naaste vrienden respectvol over de Waal tegenover zijn geliefde Veerhuis uitgestrooid op 24 juni, de dag waarop hij 76 zou zijn geworden. Het past in de filosofie van Pieter Kooistra dat de stichting zijn geestelijk erfgoed, zoals dat door hem zelf uitgebreid is vastgelegd in zijn archief, heeft ondergebracht in het Regionaal Archief Rivierenland, waar het ten eeuwigen dage ter beschikking blijft voor allen die zijn gedachtegoed zijn toegedaan of daarnaar nieuwsgierig zijn geworden. .
