    ?Volgens de overlevering werden de quaclappen (quaet clappen = kwaadspreken, roddelen) zo genoemd omdat ze aangeven welke raadsheren aanwezig waren bij de beraadslagingen over een vonniswijzing, en dus indirect ook welke raadsheren absent waren.
    In de quaclappen staan de teksten ('dicta') van vonnissen van het Hof in civiele zaken kort en bondig aangetekend, zowel de 'interlocutaire sententies' (tussenvonnissen) als de 'definitieve sententies'. Hierdoor blijft de lezer menigmaal in het ongewisse over de aard van de rechtszaak.
