    Bij de oproep van paus Urbanus II om deel te nemen aan de Eerste Kruistocht, wordt Roger II lid van het leger van Raymond IV van Toulouse, maar hij stelt om onbekende redenen zijn vertrek uit. Het uitstel leidt er toe dat hij door de paus wordt geëxcommuniceerd. Hij trekt tenslotte toch naar het Heilig Land, maar over zijn activiteiten aldaar is weinig geweten.

    Na zijn terugkeer laat hij nabij Foix een kasteel optrekken. Hij sticht de stad Pamiers, genoemd naar de Syrische stad Apamea. Verder deed hij nog belangrijke schenkingen aan de abdijen van Mazernes en van Saint-Volusien om zijn verzoening met de kerk te onderstrepen. Vermoedelijk heeft hij deelgenomen aan het beleg van Tripoli.
