    Godfried was een trouw aanhanger van keizer Hendrik IV en leverde aan deze troepen toen hij door zijn zoon verdreven werd naar Luik.
    Hij verdedigde ook zijn broer Frederik tegen zijn tegenstrever Alexander.
    In 1136 raakte hij in onmin met zijn zwager Godfried met de Baard over de aanduiding van een abt in Gembloers. Godfried trok zelfs ten strijde tegen zijn zwager en stak Gembloers eerst in brand en later overweldigde hij de stad, met de hulp van zijn schoonzoon, graaf Boudewijn IV van Henegouwen
