Filips III van Maldeghem investeerde zijn gehele fortuin om graaf Gewijde van Dampierre opnieuw te steunen in de oorlog tegen de Franse koning in 1299. Daar kreeg hij de roemvolle bijnaam “De Loyale”, voor eeuwig de trots der van Maldeghems.

Maldegem heeft als bijnaam "die Loyale", een naam die het verkreeg toen Filips III van Maldegem zich in 1300 onderscheidde door zijn trouw aan de Vlaamse Graaf. Later is die naam dan overgenomen door Maldegem zelf.
