      Albert Appelo Kzn. (1851-1922) nam het werk als turfmakelaar van Herm
      over. Hij woonde als winkelier in Zwartsluis en was getrouwd met Berendina Slagter. In het archief van de familie Bruins Slot vinden we gedrukte
      turfbriefjes van Herm van Eijken, waarin de datum deels is voorbedrukt.
      Albert nam die over, kraste Herms naam door en zette er zijn eigen op. Zo
      weten we van zijn opvolging. Herm was zeker nog in dienst in 1910, gelet
      op deze turfbriefjes. Albert Appelo werd niet meer officieel aangesteld door
      de Compagnie van 5000 Morgen en er was geen Hoogeveense turf meer.
      Hij verhandelde turf voor Hoogeveners die bijvoorbeeld rond Nieuwlande
      werd vergraven. De plaats van de handel staat duidelijk op de turfbriefjes:
      op het eilandje, de turfopslag midden in het havengebied.
