William Shearing (15 Aug.1800 ) arrived in St. John's, NF in 1816. A large portion of St. John's was destroyed by a fire in that year. William Shearing, a carpenter, obtained free passage from England to assist in the rebuilding of the city. He had learned the trade from his father, James who was born in March, 1738 in Weymouth, England. Shortly after his arrival, William met and married Mary Lush of Bonavista where they raised their family. The descendents of one of their children, John (1818 - ) who married Eleanor Shea, settled in the Point Leamington area.
