Notes about John Angel Sherren

According to the 1861 census, John was a printer, compositor. He was also an active Methodist and was well educated. He apprenticed with a print shop learning own printing business in Weymouth. One of James' sons, John, eventually took this over. Although it has since changed hands, it is still in operation today and using the name the trade. In 1837, at the age of 24 he founded his "Sherren and Son".
He became a Justice of the Peace, and was known be a character of very strong determination. A story that his descendants tell is of his determination to get a pillar box (rather than the existing small wall mounted sort) put near his home. As JP, he had a considerable amount of mail to post. The post office authorities were reluctant, so John Angel proceeded to fill regularly this small box. A pillar box soon arrived. John was also an enthusiastic freemason, becoming one in 1873 and going on to hold a succession of important offices in the organization countrywide. They first lived at 14 Spring gardens in Wyke Regis, then they went to live at Newbury. They then returned to Melcombe Regis, because his father had died. In 1881 census return they were living at 79 St. Mary Street. By 1891 the family moved to Helmsley, Westham, next door to the Coles. Their home was known as the "Helmsey" residence because that is where Annie's father was born.
John and his wife Annie Eliza Wilkenson, had a family of four: Fanny (1870 - 1943), was in a nursing career before getting married to Henry Woledge. James (1872 - 1945), later known as the famous Sailor and surgeon in England. Also a governess as well as an apprentice, a clerk and a domestic servant. So there is little doubt that the business was doing very well. John continued to run the business and take it from strength to strength until in about 1911 or 1912, he decided to dispose of it by the time of his retirement. In the 1920 trade directory, it reads 'Sherrens (H.N. Byles, propriety)'. The name Sherrens was kept and the firm has continued to be known as Sherrens to this day. Henry Nathanial Byles, from Bradford, Yorkshire, took over and gradually introduced new machinery. His youngest son Nathanial Joseph Byles took over and the firm became a public company, Sherrens & Son Ltd. in 1974. The present owner bought the business from him and could see no reason to change the name that had become so well known and respected in the town during the last hundred and fifty years. One publication that the Sherrens printed was the annual Weymouth guide, another was the Dorset Year Book of which Mr. Byles was the editor. (notes from Thea & Frances Clayton's book).
