Notes about James Panton

James took over running the brewery business from his step-mother when he was of age. In 1841 when the census was taken, he and his wife were in Whinterborne Steepleton in the household between John Sherren Luckham and Levi Groves. By 1851, James had moved to the Pound Lane premises, as shown by the census return. In Pound Lane, Wareham Lady St Mary, were: James Panton, 41, brewer, maltmaster & spirit merchant, magistrate of the borough, born Wareham; wife Mary 38, born Swanage and five children, all born in Wareham.
James was an executor and trustee to Henry Sherren (his uncle). Henry owned the brewery premises in Pound Lane and bequeathed these to James. James also inherited 400 pounds from the will of his cousin, John Sherren Luckham in 1865.
